5 Steps to Prepare for Your New Floor Installation

When you’ve chosen the perfect flooring, whether it’s waterproof vinyl, hardwood, or laminate, the next big step is getting your space ready. Preparing properly before your new floor installation can help ensure a smooth process and prevent unexpected delays. Here's how to make sure your home and your schedule are ready for the transformation.

1. Clear the Room

Start by removing all furniture, rugs, décor, and personal items from the installation area. Don’t forget closets and corners; installers need full access to every square foot. For heavier pieces, ask your flooring store if they offer furniture moving services or recommendations.

2. Take Care of Appliances and Electronics

If flooring will be installed in a kitchen, laundry room, or any space with appliances, make a plan to disconnect and move them. The same goes for TVs and electronics. Safety first: shut off power when needed, and be sure gas appliances are handled properly.

3. Plan for Door and Trim Adjustments

New flooring can change the height of your floors, which may affect doors and trim. You may need to shave doors, remove baseboards, or install new transitions. Your flooring installer may handle this, but it’s smart to clarify in advance.

4. Consider Your Schedule and Access

Depending on the type of flooring and size of the space, installation can take from a few hours to a few days. Plan around it. Keep pets and kids safely away from the work zone. If needed, set up a temporary living space or alternative entryway.

5. Ensure a Clean, Dry, and Level Surface

Before installers arrive, check that your subfloor is clean and dry. If you’ve recently removed old flooring, make sure any adhesives or debris are cleaned up. A smooth subfloor helps your new flooring perform better and last longer.
