You noticed a thin dark line between two planks that wasn't there in October. Or a seam that now sits slightly proud, catching a sock on the way past. The immediate assumption is that something has gone wrong with the floor.
Usually it hasn't. Most gapping and peaking is a floor doing exactly what it was engineered to do - moving with the seasons and moving back. But some of it genuinely is a problem, and the two look similar enough that knowing the difference is worth five minutes.

1. Does it reverse?
This is the single most useful test. Normal seasonal movement follows the calendar: gaps that open in January should close as spring humidity returns, and summer peaking should settle by autumn. 2. Is it uniform, or in one place?

3. How wide is it?

4. Is anything else happening?
Gapping alone is usually benign. Gapping alongside cupping (edges higher than centers), buckling (planks lifting off the subfloor), soft or spongy spots, or a musty smell is a different situation entirely - those combinations point to moisture reaching the floor from below or from a leak, not to dry winter air.
